Tech's Laitala Garners ACC Swimmer Of The Week Accolades

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech junior David Laitala has been named the ACC Swimmer of the Week for January 8, after leading the Yellow Jackets to a perfect 5-0 record over the past week. Tech now has an 8-2 dual-meet record in 2000-01, ensuring the team of its first winning dual-meet season since 1992. Laitala is the second Yellow Jacket to earn the distinction this season, joining sophomore Shilo Ayalon, who was named Swimmer of the Week on October 16.

Laitala, a native of Richardson, Texas, led the Yellow Jackets to four wins in the Florida Atlantic Dual Meet Extravaganza and a win over UNC Wilmington, as well. Georgia Tech defeated host Florida Atlantic, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Virginia Tech in the five-team dual meet.

Laitala won four individual events in the two meets. Taking first place in the 50-yard butterfly (23.48), the 50-yard backstroke (24.47) and the 150-yard butterfly (1:22.13) at the Florida Atlantic meet. Against UNC Wilmington, He won the 100-meter butterfly (58.46) and was a member of the 400-meter freestyle relay team that finished first in a time of 3:40.12.

The Tech men’s swimming and diving team will return to action on Friday when it travels to Raleigh, N.C., for an ACC matchup with NC State beginning at 3 p.m.
