Tech’s Carpenter Drafted by Green Bay Packers

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech defensive back Tariq Carpenter (Ludowici, Ga./Long County) was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round (No. 228 overall) of the 2022 National Football League Draft on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Carpenter becomes the 223rd player in Georgia Tech history to be selected in the NFL Draft. He is the first Georgia Tech defensive back to be drafted since D.J. White in 2016 (sixth round – Kansas City) and the first Yellow Jacket to be selected by the Packers since defensive back Morgan Burnett went to Green Bay in the third round of the 2010 Draft.

A 6-4, 225-pounder, Carpenter played in 52 games over five seasons at Georgia Tech (2017-21), including 50-straight to close his collegiate career. He made 41 starts, all at safety, and tallied 223 total tackles (153 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, three forced fumbles and 22 passes defended. He graduated from Georgia Tech in December 2021 with a B.S. in literature, media and communication.

In Green Bay, Carpenter will be reunited with former Georgia Tech teammate Tyler Davis, who is a third-year NFL tight end with the Packers. Davis was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2020 NFL Draft.

With Carpenter’s selection, Georgia Tech has now had at least one offensive or defensive player picked in three-straight NFL Drafts for the first time since 2014-16.
