Tech Women's Tennis Begins ITA South Regional Play in Athens Thursday

Oct. 12, 2005

ATLANTA –

Georgia Tech will begin play in the 2005 Wilson/ITA South Regional Women’s Tennis Championship Thursday morning at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. Admission is free, and the tournament will run through Sunday with the finals and consolation finals in singles, as well as the semifinals, finals and consolation finals in doubles being held on the final day of competition.

The tournament will showcase players from 21 different schools around the south, including the nation’s top-ranked singles and doubles players. There are two flights, “A” and “B”, which will have a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles bracket, both with consolations.

Four of the nation’s top-10 ranked singles players are from the ITA’s southern region, including top-ranked Jennifer Magley of Florida, No. 4 Robin Stephenson (Alabama), Georgia’s No. 6 Shadisha Robinson, and the Yellow Jackets’ eighth-ranked Kristi Miller. There are also four doubles teams in the region that are ranked in the top-10, including No. 1 Robinson and Caroline Basu from Georgia, Tech’s fifth-ranked tandem of Miller and Alison Silverio, No. 7 Gabrielle Duch and Neyssa Etienne of South Florida, and Florida’s No. 8 Magley and Diana Srebovic.

The flight singles and doubles winners, along with the singles finalist, in the “A” bracket advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which are scheduled to be held in November at Ohio State. The ITA National Indoor Championships is the second collegiate “grand slam” event of the season, and winners and finalists from all of the ITA Regional Championships, plus certain at-large selections, will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.

The ITA Southern Regional will feature players from Alabama, Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Florida, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Mercer, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi, Mississippi State, North Florida, South Florida, Southern Miss, Southeast Missouri State, Troy, UAB and UCF.

The other ITA Regionals are being held at Michigan State (Midwest), North Carolina (Southeast), San Diego/San Diego State (West) Stanford (Northwest), Texas A&M (Southwest), the United States Military Academy (East) and Utah (Central).

The draw for the ITA South Regional will become available Wednesday evening and be posted on the tournament website at www.georgiadogs.com. Results for all Georgia Tech players will be posted on the Georgia Tech website at the end of each day’s play.
