ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ulrike Stegemann and Talisa Kellogg combined for 26 kills and Michelle Kandell and Lindsey Gray provided the defense with 36 digs between the two as Georgia Tech (6-3) shut out Utah Valley (5-4), 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-21), Friday afternoon in the Yellow Jackets’ second match of the Michigan/Nike Invitational.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0 in the tournament, which is being contested at the University of Michigan’s Cliff Keen Arena.
Stegemann led all players with 14 kills while hitting .400 against the Wolverines, and Kellogg added 12 kills on the afternoon. Both players had six digs and a block assist against Utah Valley, while Stegemann added a pair of service aces.
Kandell posted a match-high 21 kills while Gray had 15 digs, eight kills, three service aces, a solo block and a block assist in the match. Callie Miller led the Jackets with six block assists and added six kills for the Jackets.
Mary Ashley Tippins ran the Tech offense by posting 46 assists, and the Atlanta freshman added eight digs and a pair of block assists on the afternoon.
After using a 7-2 run to take a five-point lead halfway through the first game, Tech held off a late Utah Valley rally to win, 30-28. Talisa Kellogg and Lindsey Gray had six kills apiece while Michelle Kandell added six digs for the Jackets in the frame.
With the score knotted at 23-23 in the second game, the Jackets scored four consecutive points, and seven of the last eight, to win 30-24, giving Tech a 2-0 lead in the match. Stegemann paced the Jackets’ offense with five kills in the frame, while Kandell added eight digs.
Tech jumped out to a quick, 13-5, lead in the third game and cruised to a 30-21 win to seal the Jackets’ second shutout on the afternoon.
The Jackets will conclude tournament play Saturday night when they face the 10th-ranked Wolverines of Michigan at 7:30 p.m. in the tournament finale.
