Tech Tabbed No. 5 in AVCA Top 25

LEXINGTON, Ky. Georgia Tech volleyball has been ranked No. 5 in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Women’s Poll, the organization announced on Monday. The five spot ties the second highest ranking received by the Yellow Jackets in program history, joining the 2003 squad, who held the mark through four consecutive weeks.

Tech becomes one of two ACC teams inside the top five and remains one of three in the top 10. The Jackets are slated to face four opponents ranked in the current top 10 this season in No. 3 Louisville, No. 7 BYU, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 10 Pitt. Each of the aforementioned teams reached the NCAA Tournament in 2021 as Louisville and Pitt each advanced to the Final Four while Ohio State and BYU both played into the Sweet 16. The Jackets eliminated the Buckeyes during their Elite Eight run.

The Jackets’ selection marks the third consecutive appearance in the AVCA’s top 10 after being tabbed No. 9 in last week’s preseason rankings and No. 8 at the end of the 2021 season. The final ranking of the 2021 season also tied the highest finish at a season’s end in program history alongside 2003’s Elite Eight team.

Reappearing in the Top 25 for the first time since 2005 at No. 12 on Sept. 30, 2020, Tech has since been listed in 40 straight top 25 polls to date. This week’s No. 5 ranking marks the highest for the White and Gold during that stretch.

Georgia Tech earns its historic ranking after running the table in the Ole Miss Invitational, downing tournament host Ole Miss, 3-1, before sweeping No. 19 Illinois. The Yellow Jackets overcame a slow start against the Rebels, thanks in large part to a 33 kill performance by senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann. The White and Gold had no trouble with the Fighting Illini, earning their first sweep and ranked victory of the season after outscoring Illinois by 18 combined points in the final two sets of the sweep. The Yellow Jackets were tabbed winners of the Ole Miss Invitational as the lone undefeated team, with Bergmann being named tournament MVP and to the all-tournament team alongside graduate middle blocker Breland Morrissette.

As a unit, Georgia Tech is currently top five in the ACC in assists per set (12.57), hitting percentage (.266) and kills per set (14.14), owning the third highest mark in the latter. Individually, Bergmann sits atop the nation in both kills per set (6.43) and points per set (7.21).

Tech has won 60 of its last 72 matches dating back to 2019. The Yellow Jackets have also won 35 of their last 40 matches at home in O’Keefe Gymnasium.

The Jackets will make their official return to O’Keefe Gymnasium hosting the GT Invitational, where they’ll battle Dayton on Friday at 8 p.m., Arizona State on Saturday at 5 p.m. and FIU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
