Tech Swimming and Diving to Face Stiff Test at Georgia Invitational

Nov. 29, 2001

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech Swimming and Diving program will compete in its first invitational meet of the season this weekend when it travels to Athens for the Georgia Invitational. Action at Gabielsen Natatorium will run from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon.

The meet will present a new challenge for the men and women’s teams, as they will tackle several nationally-ranked squads. Joining the Jackets as combined programs in the meet are Clemson, Florida State, Florida Atlantic, Minnesota, Alabama and the host Bulldogs. The women only from Michigan and Northwestern will also compete.

“This meet will provide a great opportunity to race some highly ranked teams,” said Tech head coach Seth Baron. “As a three-day competition, it will be a great preparation for the ACC Championships in February.”

Morning sessions on Friday and Saturday are slated for 10:30 a.m., followed by evening sessions at 6:30 p.m. Sunday’s morning session will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the afternoon action will start at 3 p.m.

Tech’s men enter the meet having won three consecutive dual meets. The Jackets (3-1, 1-1 ACC) are led by junior All-American Shilo Ayalon, who owns the team’s fastest times in the 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle, and junior James Salazar, who has posted Tech’s best performances in the 200 fly, 200 back and 400 individual medley.

The first-year Yellow Jacket women’s program is led by freshmen Cara DeVinny and Anna Saum. DeVinny owns the team’s top times in five events: 200 free, 200 fly, 200 breast and 200 and 400 IM. Saum ranks as the team’s fastest in the 50 and 100 free, 100 fly and 100 back. The women stand at 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference in dual meet action.

Sophomore Paul McCarty and freshman Amy Sutton rank as the teams’ top respective divers.

“We expect our athletes to perform at their best and to continue to improve on their technical aspects of their swims,” added Baron. “We want to see a lot of fast swims, but once again, we are going to save our very best swims for the ACC Championships.”
