Tech Swimming and Diving Opens Season with Sweep of Emory

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their seasons in impressive fashion Friday, winning a combined 22 of 26 events, and sweeping Emory at the Woodruff P.E. Center. The men defeated the Eagles, 154-84, while the women were victorious, 142-97.

Leading the way for the Jackets as multiple event winners were senior All-American Shilo Ayalon, who won the men’s 200 (1:42.16) and 500-yard freestyle (4:34.29), sophomore Cara DeVinny, who took the women’s 200 IM (2:08.98) and 200 breast (2:27.06), and freshman Laurissa Prystaj, who won the women’s one (289.35) and three-meter (283.58) diving events. She qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in both events with Friday’s marks.

In addition to Prystaj, several Yellow Jacket newcomers had impressive debuts. On the men’s side, freshman Yonatan Cohen won the 200 IM in a time of 1:57.03, and classmate Brian Huff placed first in the 100 free (48.45). As for the women, freshman Meghan DeVinney won the 200 fly in 2:06.44, while Ashley Kracke took the 200 back (2:07.52).

Other individual winners for the women were sophomores Lisa Hancock (1000 free) and Anna Saum (54.34). The women also took first in the 200 medley and free relays.

Juniors Eduardo Oliver (1000 free), Mike Comer (50 free), senior James Salazar (200 fly), sophomore Matt Figh (200 back), junior Paul McCarty (one-meter diving) and senior Tomonori Tsuji (200 breast) were also victorious for Tech. The Jackets also won both relays.

With the victories, the Tech men are now 75-4 versus the Eagles, while the women are now 2-0.

The Jackets return to action next weekend, as the women face North Florida in Jacksonville on Friday, and both teams open the ACC slate against Florida State in Tallahassee on Saturday.
