Tech Swimming and Diving Looks for Wins at North Florida, Florida State

Oct. 31, 2002

ATLANTA – Hoping to build on a sweep of Emory, the Georgia Tech swimming and diving team continues its season this weekend with a trip to Florida. The Yellow Jacket women will swim North Florida at Jacksonville’s UNF Aquatic Center at 3 p.m. Friday, while both teams open the ACC slate Saturday at Florida State at 2 p.m.

Tech’s men (ranked 23rd nationally) and women are both 1-0 on the season, posting season-opening victories over the Eagles on October 25. The men won 154-84, while the women were victorious, 142-97.

Senior All-American Shilo Ayalon led the men’s squad with victories in the 200 and 500 free, as the team took 12 of 13 events from Emory. Tech displayed a great deal of depth, as nine different Jackets posted individual wins.

The women are led by sophomore Cara DeVinny, who won the 200 IM and 200 breast last time out. Freshman diver Laurissa Prystaj won both diving events against Emory with NCAA Zone Championships-qualifying marks. Sophomores Lisa Hancock (1000 free) and Anna Saum (100 free) also posted wins against the Eagles.

North Florida’s women own a 1-0 mark on the season with a 133-109 victory over Georgia Southern on October 19. The Jackets and Lady Ospreys met last year with Tech winning 137-93 to earn one of the program’s first-ever victories.

The Seminoles should provide a tough early-season test for both teams. The FSU men stand 2-0 with a victory over Miami on October 12. The Florida State women’s squad Is also 2-0 and is coming off a third-place finish at the recent SMU Women’s Classic. A year ago, the Seminoles swept the Jackets, defeating the men, 140-97, and the women, 146-86.
