ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men and women’s swimming and diving teams will wrap up the dual meet portion of their schedules Saturday when they host Western Kentucky at 11 a.m. at Emory’s Woodruff P.E. Center.
Tech’s men (5-3, 3-1 ACC) enter the meet assured of their second consecutive winning season for the first time since 1992, while the first-year women’s program is 4-6 and 0-4 in conference action.
The Yellow Jacket men are seeking their second straight victory over the Hilltoppers, as Tech defeated Western Kentucky. 160-134, a year ago. WKU leads the all-time series, 9-2.
“Western Kentucky will provide our team with a many challenges throughout this dual meet,” says Tech head coach Seth Baron. “Both their men and women’s team have NCAA Championship-caliber athletes. They will give us everything that we can handle.”
“Since this is our last meet prior to ACCs, we are hoping to see better execution of stroke technique, starts, turns and finishes,” adds Baron. “This will be our final tune-up as we look forward to an outstanding ACC Championships.”
This meet will also be the final dual meet for six Tech seniors: David Laitala, Hank Longmire, Carl Nylander, Leo Salinas, David Silver and Brady Skaggs. During their time on The Flats, this group has seen the program rise from seventh in the ACC in 1998-99 to program-best finishes of third in the conference and 29th at the NCAA Championships a year ago.
Following this meet, the Jackets will continue training for the ACC Championships. The women’s meet is February 21-23, while the men will compete February 28-March 2. Both competitions are slated for the University of Maryland’s Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
