Tech Swimming and Diving Announces 2002-03 Slate

July 16, 2002

ATLANTA – After piloting the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams to a successful first season as a combined program, Jackets’ head coach Seth Baron announced the teams’ 2002-03 schedule Tuesday.

With the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center still under renovation, the Yellow Jackets will host their home meets at Emory’s Woodruff P.E. Center for the second consecutive year. Tech opens the season against the Eagles on October 25.

Atlantic Coast Conference rival Clemson and Southeastern Conference power Alabama round out the home slate. The Tigers head to Atlanta January 10, while the Crimson Tide and Jackets will square off January 11.

Tech will have a ton of exposure to its conference foes prior to the ACC Championships, as the Jackets will face six league opponents in the dual meet portion of the schedule. In addition to the meeting with Clemson, Tech will travel to Florida State on November 2, Duke on January 24 and NC State on January 25. The Jackets will meet North Carolina and Maryland in a double dual meet on February 1 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Jackets will step out of ACC competition for a two-day, double dual meet against Purdue and Cincinnati in West Lafayette, Ind. Tech has never faced either of these two teams.

All dual meets will feature both the men’s and women’s squads with the exception of two. The men will travel to Athens on November 7 to face in-state rival Georgia, while the women’s team will face North Florida in Jacksonville on November 1. The Jackets defeated the Lady Ospreys last season for one of the team’s first-ever wins.

The ACC Championships will be held in Chapel Hill, N.C., with the women competing February 20-22 and the men going February 27 to March 1.

The women’s NCAA Championships are slated for March 20-22 at Auburn University, while the men’s event will be March 27-29 at the University of Texas. Tech’s Cara DeVinny qualified for the 2002 women’s championships in three events, while the men’s team tallied 11 points and posted a program-best 27th-place finish at last season’s NCAAs.
