Tech Splits Day Two of ACC/B1G Challenge

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball split its second day of competition as a host site in the ACC/B1G Challenge, coming up short against Wisconsin, 6-1, before downing Illinois, 5-2. The Yellow Jackets made the most of their opportunities at the plate against the Fighting Illini as a pair of two-RBI doubles propelled them back into the win column.

Game One: Georgia Tech exploded out of the gate as junior designated player Sara Beth Allen launched her second solo bomb in as many days for a 1-0 Yellow Jacket lead in the top of the first. Wisconsin responded in the bottom of the frame, setting up a three-run home run to move ahead, 3-1. The Badgers added another run in the second on a wild pitch, holding onto the three-run advantage for the next three innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Wisconsin tacked on two more runs by way of an RBI triple and bunt for a score, increasing its lead to what proved to be the final tally, 6-1.

Game Two: Georgia Tech jumped on Illinois early, leading off the game with back-to-back singles courtesy of freshman right fielder Paige Vukadinovich and senior catcher Emma Kauf. A subsequent walk loaded the bases, setting up a two-RBI double by junior third baseman Mallorie Black. Another single by sophomore first baseman Madison Dobbins soon after filled up the base path once more, allowing sophomore outfielder Auburn Dupree to drive in a third run, resulting in a 3-0 Tech lead after one. The Yellow Jackets piled on in the third, putting three ducks on the pond yet again to set up another two-RBI double, this time off the bat of sophomore Ella Edgmon for her first hit of the season. With Tech holding a 5-0 advantage, Illinois carved into the lead in the top of the fourth, inching closer with a pair of RBI singles. The Jacket pitching staff closed out the remainder of the contest, blanking the Fighting Illini for the final three innings for a 5-2 Tech victory.
