ATLANTA – Optimistic about a successful season, the Georgia Tech softball team will open its 2002 season Sunday when the Jackets host Gardner-Webb for a doubleheader, which starts at 1 p.m. at Glenn Field.
Tech, which finished 24-29 a year ago, returns six starters in the field, as well as its entire pitching staff. The Yellow Jackets have also added a solid group of newcomers that includes three freshmen and a pair of junior transfers.
Tech’s top returning pitcher is sophomore Erin Voeltz, who led the team in wins, strikeouts, saves, shutouts and complete games in 2001. At the plate, the Jackets leading batter a year ago was sophomore Tara Knudsen, who hit .259 with five home runs and 12 runs batted in. Head coach Kate Madden will look to Tech’s lone senior, Jamie Frost, to provide leadership, as well as strong defense at third base.
This meeting will be the first between Tech and Gardner-Webb. The Lady Bulldogs were slated to open the season Thursday against St. Andrews, but the meeting was postponed. They will host Campbell on Saturday prior to heading to Atlanta.
Following Sunday’s games, Tech returns to action on Wednesday, February 13, when it hosts Furman at Glenn Field at 2 p.m.
