COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Georgia Tech’s men’s swimming and diving team defeated Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Maryland Friday by a score of 126-111. The first-year Yellow Jackets’ women’s team lost to the Terps, 153-74.
Once again leading the Tech men (1-1, 1-1 ACC) was the junior All-American tandem of Shilo Ayalon and Tomonori Tsuji. Ayalon captured the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle, while Tsuji won the 200-yard breaststroke. Other wins for the Jackets came from senior David Laitala (200 IM), sophomore Paul McCarty (three-meter diving) and junior James Salazar (200 back). Tech also captured the 400-yard medley relay to open the meet.
On the women’s side, freshman Cara DeVinny was impressive, placing second in the 200 free, 200 breast and 200 fly. Rookie Anna Saum was second in the 200 IM, while classmates Lisa Hancock (500 free), Amy Sutton (three-meter diving) and Moeko Wallis (50 free) also posted runner-up finishes.
The women’s squad is now 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the ACC.
Tech returns to action tomorrow when the Jackets face American University. Diving is slated to begin at 10 a.m., while swimming action will start at 1 p.m.
