ATLANTA – Bailey Hunter and Chrissy DeMichelis led the Yellow Jackets with 13 kills apiece as the Georgia Tech volleyball team (9-4, 3-0 ACC) defeated North Carolina (5-8, 1-1), 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-17) Sunday afternoon at O’Keefe Gymnasium.
Hunter hit a season-high .619 for the match to go with her 13 kills. DeMichelis, meanwhile, finished with four blocks including three solo. Freshman Monique Mead added 10 kills and five digs for the Jackets. Junior Jordan McCullers led the Jackets on defense with 19 of the teams’ season-high 55 digs (in three sets). Freshman Hannah Tucci finished with a career-high 10 digs. The Jackets hit .321 for the match, while holding North Carolina to .177.
In the first set, Tech opened a 17-12 lead over the Tar Heels. Carolina would scratch its way back but the Jackets held on for a 25-22 first-set victory and a 1-0 lead. McCullers led the Tech defense with 11 digs and Mead (6) and DeMichelis (5) provided the offense.
Down 12-9 in the second set, head coach Tonya Johnson called a timeout to regroup her players. The team responded with 16-8 run for a 25-20 win. Hunter hit .800 in the set with four kills and MuCullers added six more digs for the Jackets.
Tech opened the third set with two straight blocks and cruised to a 25-17 win to capture the match in three sets. Junior Mary Ashley Tippins registered 14 of her match-high 42 assists.
Georgia Tech will take its first conference road trip of the season when the Jackets travel to Florida State next Friday, Oct. 2 beginning at 7 p.m. Tech will then head further south to Miami on Sunday, Oct. 4 for a 1 p.m. start against the Hurricanes.
