THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball (16-12, 5-10 ACC) fell to Syracuse (16-7, 12-3 ACC) 3-0 on Sunday afternoon, in the final home game of the regular season at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

The first set was tight the whole way. The Jackets took the first lead early and although there were eight tied scores, the Tech didn’t trail until the Orange took a one-point edge at 18-17. Tech tallied back-to-back points on a kill from sophomore Dominique Washington and an ace from freshman Kayla Kaiser to take back the lead. The teams traded points until Syracuse went back ahead by one at 21-20 and Tech called the first timeout of the set. A kill from freshman Mikaila Dowd tied the score right back up at 21-21 coming out of the timeout. Battling to a tie at 23-23, Syracuse took set point and Tech called timeout. A kill from senior Lauren Frerking kept the Jackets alive. The Orange went ahead once again but back-to-back kills from Washington gave the Jackets set point at 26-25 and Syracuse called timeout. The Orange took back the lead but another kill from Washington tied it at 27-27. Syracuse took the final two points to pocket the first set at 29-27.
Tech took the first lead in the second set, leading 7-3 on a block from freshman Mariana Brambilla and junior Kodie Comby. Syracuse battled back with a 6-1 run to take over the lead at 9-8. Tech tied it right back up at 9-9 but Syracuse pushed back out to a 12-9 lead and the Jackets called the first timeout of the set. The Orange moved their lead to nine at 20-11 and the Jackets called their second timeout. Tech fought to come within five on an ace from Dowd and the Orange called timeout with the score at 21-16. Syracuse took set point at 24-17 but the Jackets didn’t let up, taking three in a row to bring the score to 24-20 on a kill from Brambilla and Syracuse called its second timeout. Tech was able to get one more before Syracuse finally took the set at 25-21 for the 2-0 lead.
Syracuse carried the momentum into the third set, leading 9-4 when the Jackets called their first timeout. Tech battled, staying within striking distance of the Orange. The Jackets tied the set at 14-14 on a huge block from Comby and Washington and Syracuse called its first timeout of the set. The Orange pushed back out to lead 17-14 and Tech used its second timeout. The Jackets were unable to come back and Syracuse took the third set at 25-18 for the 3-0 win.
