Swimming & Diving Inks Eight Newcomers for 2000-01 Season

ATLANTA (June 15) – Georgia Tech Head Swimming & Diving Coach Seth Baron announced today the signing of eight swimmers for the 2000-01 season.

Included in the class of 2004 is a pair of Olympic Trial qualifiers and a European junior finalist, along with the Michigan state runner-up in diving competition.

“We are very excited about this new crop of incoming freshmen,” said Baron. “Without a doubt, Georgia Tech will have a better team in the water next year since we have had another strong recruiting year.”

Heading up the list of incoming freshman is Chris Biedrzycki (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), who is one of the Olympic Trials qualifiers in the group and also was a three-time runner-up at the 2000 Southeast Junior Nationals. Biedrzycki will compete in the 200 and 400 IM, along with the 100 and 200 breaststroke. He already holds an impressive top time in the 400 IM of 3:54.19.

Freestyler Matt Potter (Tempe, Ariz./McClintock) is the second qualifier for the Olympic Trials in the incoming class. Along with the Olympic Trials, Potter is also a 2000 West Junior National scorer and a Senior National qualifier.

On Biedrzycki and Potter, Baron commented, “With the addition of Olympic Trial Qualifiers, we have added some great talent in Chris Biedrzycki and Matt Potter. In addition we have added Itai Eden who is very versatile and can assist our dual meet line-up in many different ways.”

Eden (Kiyat Ono, Israel/Ben Tzvi) is the third member of the class of 2004, and comes to Tech after being a finalist in the European Juniors in both the 200 and 400 IM. In those events, he holds top times of 1:50.72 (200 IM) and 3:56.73 (400 IM), which are both nearly NCAA B qualifying times according to the past season’s standards.

Paul McCarty (Ypsilanti, Mich./Clearbrook) will join senior Dustin Thorn (Marietta, Ga.) to form Tech’s diving contingent. McCarty carries with him strong credentials as he was the Michigan state diving runner-up this past season.

“Paul will be a valued addition as we increase our depth with our divers,” Baron said.

The Yellow Jackets will add the services of two more freestylers in Ricky Rauch (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek), who will compete in the 200 and 500 Free, and Brendan Forbes (Lilburn, Ga./Shiloh), who will swim the 50, 100 and 200 Free, along with the 100 Butterfly.

Rounding out the group of freshmen will be Richard Lau (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook), who specializes in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and Jordan Parker (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood), who will compete in the 200 Breast and the 400 IM.
