ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s swimming and diving team will open its 2000-01 season on Friday, October 13, by hosting James Madison at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center at 5 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets will be facing the Dukes for the first time in school history, and will be looking to begin the 2001 dual-meet season the same way they ended 2000, with a win. Tech defeated Louisville on the road last February by a 181-112 count.
Tech will be looking to improve on last year’s 5-6 dual-meet record, and a school-best tying sixth place finish at the ACC Championships.
The Jackets return a solid corps of swimmers, including all of the point scorers from the 2000 ACC meet. Heading the group is junior All-ACC performer David Laitala (Richardson, Texas), who became the first Tech swimmer to earn all-conference honors since 1989 with his second-place showing in the 100 butterfly at the ACCs a year ago.
Also returning this year will be sophomore Shilo Ayalon (Kfar Hanassi, Israel), who set four school records as a rookie in 2000.
The first 200 fans in attendance at Friday’s meet will receive free pizza.
