Spring Football Practice #4

March 29, 2008

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech’s two-hour practice session here at Rose Bowl Fields Saturday morning, the Yellow Jackets’ fourth practice of the spring, gave every healthy player on the roster an opportunity in a scrimmage-like situation.

Nearly the entire practice was a controlled scrimmage and first-year Tech head coach Paul Johnson saw mixed results.

“I saw some good things,” Johnson said, “and some bad. I am just looking for guys who want to compete.

“We have a lot of areas we need to work on. We need to get great effort from everyone and we just need to get better every day.”

Those in attendance trying to formulate a two-deep in their head had difficulty doing so. The Yellow Jackets used numerous combinations with the walk-ons getting nearly as many reps as the returning starters.

Notebook
– Sophomore B-back Lucas Cox, the younger brother of former Tech fullback Mike Cox, had one long carry and rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Lucas can now boast to his older sibling that he had more TDs today than Mike had his entire career. To be fair, Lucas’ runs came mostly against the No. 2 defensive unit. Mike, of course, was one of the ACC’s best blocking backs.
– Sophomore quarterback Josh Nesbitt hit sophomore receiver Demaryius Thomas with perhaps the play of the day — a long touchdown pass in the corner of the endzone.
– ESPN Gameday announcer Desmond Howard, the former Heisman Trophy winner, was among those in attendance.
– The Yellow Jackets have Sunday off before resuming practice Monday afternoon.
