ATLANTA — Georgia Tech went through two-plus hours of practice here Friday — in full pads for the first time this spring. Practice continues Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Rose Bowl Fields.
Notebook
– One unique thing about a Paul Johnson practice is that the quarterbacks don’t wear a different-colored jersey. In other words, they are fair game just like everyone else.
– It will likely be late spring before a two-deep depth chart of any accuracy can be produced, but it’s a given that the defense will have an interesting mix of veterans and youth. Three seniors are odds-on favorites to earn starting positions on the defensive line. Cornerback Jahi Word-Daniels, meanwhile, may end up being the only senior among the defensive backs and the linebackers.
– There’s only one true freshman scholarship player in practice — wide receiver Tyler Melton. Melton was actually part of last year’s recruiting class, but did not enroll at Tech until January.
– Several players have new jersey numbers this spring:
DB Willie White goes from #88 to #6
RB Roddy Jones goes from #24 to #20
RB Jamaal Evans goes from #20 to #22
OT Nick Claytor goes from #76 to #75
OT Jason Hill goes from #75 to #72
