Scott Simpson, a 2010 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and currently enrolled in Georgia Tech[apos]s master[apos]s program in aerospace engineering, has joined the Georgia Tech golf program as a volunteer assistant coach.
Simpson will assist with various duties involving fund-raising, recruiting, team practices and workouts.
A former all-district cornerback who helped lead his high school football team to a pair of class 5A football state championships, Simpson received his bachelor[apos]s degree in mechanical engineering in May of 2010 with a grade-point average of 3.9. Out of 1050 students in his class, he ranked 50th in the Academic Order of Merit, 25th in the Military Order of Merit and 35th in the Overall Order of Merit.
The native of Dallas, Texas, currently has a 4.0 average in the Tech master[apos]s program and is working toward receiving his graduate degree in June of 2012.
During his time at the Naval Academy, Simpson made the Superintendent[apos]s List for overall excellence in academic, physical and personal development from fall 2006 through fall 2009, and placed sixth at the Olympic Weightlifting Collegiate Nationals. He served as a company squad leader, battalion character advisor and Midshipmen group study tutor.
Following graduation, Simpson summited Mt. McKinley on an unguided expedition with three other Naval Academy graduates, and he has been selected to train as a naval aviator following completion of graduate school.
