THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech softball team (21-18, 10-12 ACC) resumes ACC play this weekend with a pivotal three-game series at ACC newcomer Pittsburgh (13-24, 4-14). The Yellow Jackets and Panthers square off in a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday’s series finale is set for 12 p.m.
Only the top eight of the 11 teams in the ACC qualify for the 2014 ACC Championship, set for May 8-10 in College Park, Md. Tech is currently in seventh in the ACC standings and takes on No. 8/9 Florida State following the series at Pittsburgh.
Boston College (23-18, 7-10) holds the eighth spot, but has a tough three-game series this weekend against NC State. Pitt is in ninth place and takes on 10th-place Maryland after the Georgia Tech series.
Series History
The series marks the fifth time the two teams will meet. Pitt holds a 3-1 advantage and has won the last three games in the series.
Georgia Tech
Six Yellow Jackets are hitting above .300 led by Ashley Thomas’ .388 clip, which is third in the ACC. As a team, Georgia Tech is third in the league with a .307 batting average and .385 on base percentage.
Tech tops the league in stolen bases (59), and seniors Hayley Downs and Ashley Thomas are third and fifth in the league with 19 and 17 stolen bases, respectively.
In ACC games, sophomore Maddie Lionberger is producing at the plate with a .431 hitting clip and 18 RBI on 22 hits.

The Jackets host Kennesaw State in a single game on Wednesday, April 23 at 6 p.m., before traveling to Tallahassee, Fla. for a three-game set against No. 8/9 Florida State April 26-27.
