ATLANTA – Enjoying its best-season to date, the Georgia Tech softball team’s momentum has carried over into its recruiting efforts, as the Yellow Jackets inked a pair of prep standouts Wednesday. Amy Hosier of Lakewood, Colo., and Lauren Schlechte of St. Louis, signed national letters of intent, head coach Kate Madden announced.
An all-state center fielder at Lakewood High School, Hosier batted .407 with 16 runs scored and 12 runs batted in as a senior. She started every game for four seasons and was a team co-captain for two years. A two-time all-conference selection, Hosier ranked in the top five in RBI and slugging in her conference, while posting a perfect fielding percentage last season.
She is also a member of the Colorado Twisters summer team, which placed in the top 12 at USSSA nationals a year ago. She batted .382 with 15 RBI and placed seventh in a national base running competition.
“Amy will be a great outfielder for us,” Madden said. “She is a very intense player with several tools. She’s very fast, and has a great arm. She would be great in a leadoff position because of her speed and consistent hitting.”
Hosier is also a four-year member of the Academic Honor Roll, as well as a four-time academic letterwinner. She is also a first-team academic all-state selection.
After leading St. Louis’ Oakville High School in home runs, triples, RBI and slugging, Schlechte was a second-team all-state choice as a senior, as well as an all-conference and all-district honoree. A four-year letterwinner, she was a second-team all-conference selection as a junior.
Schlechte is also a member of the St. Louis Storm summer team, leading the team in doubles, triples and runs batted in last season. She was chosen team MVP of the 2001 Ellisville Tournament, as well as a member of the 2001 College Showcase All-Tournament Team.
Schlechte is an honor roll student, as well as a four-year class executive. She won the scholar-athlete award from ninth through 12th grades and is a member of the senior mentoring program. She was also honored for outstanding academic achievement for three years.
“Lauren will add major depth to our infield as she has experience at third base and shortstop,” Madden said. “What we love about her is her size, power at the plate and her extremely strong arm. We expect her to contribute right away.”
“The coaching staff is looking very forward to having Lauren and Amy join the team,” Madden added.
