Silverio and Nieto Lead Tech Women's Tennis on Day One of the June Stewart Fall Invitational

Alison Silverio and Maria Nieto both won a singles and doubles match to lead the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team on day one of the 2003 June Stewart Fall Invitational, which is being hosted by Vanderbilt at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. The tournament features players from Tech, Arizona State, Middle Tennessee State, Ole Miss and host Vanderbilt.

Silverio, a freshman from Louisville, Ohio, began the day by teaming with fellow freshman Lindsey Stauss to defeat Ole Miss’ Conerly and Ladyman by an 8-1 mark, but the fell in the second round of doubles to Vanderbilt’s Schellhas and Fish, 8-1. They will continue doubles play at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday against Middle Tennessee State’s duo of Williams and Cibils. Silverio also earned a win in her only singles match of the day as she defeated Vandy’s Ashley Schellhas, ranked 85th in the country, by a 6-3, 6-4 score.

Nieto, a senior from Madrid, Spain, and Lyndsay Shosho teamed together in doubles, losing their first match of the day by an 8-0 mark to Vandy’s Falk and Menees. They came back in the second match, however, and defeated Arizona State’s Colalillo and Capannalo, 8-3. Nieto and Shosho will resume play on Sunday against Ole Miss’ Basile and Harboe at 9:30 a.m. Nieto defeated Ole Miss’ Emily Ladyman 7-5, 6-2 in her only singles match and will play against Middle Tennessee State’s Ana Maria Cibils at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Also earning singles wins on the day were Kelly Anderson and Sekita Grant. Anderson defeated Arizona State’s Lauren Colalillo by a 7-5, 6-1 score while Grant downed Ole Miss’ Audra Adams, 6-2, 6-1.

The tournament is being played in round robin format. Georgia Tech’s doubles teams will play one match apiece on both Saturday and Sunday while the individuals will compete in two singles matches on Saturday and one on Sunday.
