Question and Answer with Defensive Tackle Omar Billy

Sept. 19, 2005

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

“People might not know that I love dogs.”

What would be your ultimate Sports Center highlight?

“Scoring a touchdown would be the beginning of the highlight but the excessive celebration I would do after the touchdown would be the main highlight. Whenever I go out, I tend to practice what kind of dance or move I might do. One cool thing to do would be to jump into the stands like the Green Bay Packers do at Lambeau Field. Regardless of what I would do, it would be the most memorable celebration in NCAA history.”

If you could exchange wardrobes with any player, who would it be?

“I can’t think of any current player but one past player that comes to mind would be Mark Logan. He was such consistent dresser from his shoes up to his hat and never missed a beat.”

Tell about one visible scar…

“I have many due to football but there’s one on my eyebrow that you can barely see that I got from playing football when I was younger. I lowered my head to run somebody over and I hit their tooth, which actually got stuck in my eyebrow.”

If you could relive any single family outing in your life, what would it be?

“I just got back from a trip to Trinidad for my cousin’s wedding and I had a lot of fun. I saw a lot of family that I hadn’t been able to see in over nine years. I’m really proud of my culture and enjoy going there. The beaches are really nice and the food is great. It really opens up your mind and I appreciate the culture. I basically love going to Trinidad and I’m hoping to go back there as soon as football season is over.”

If you could have season tickets for any team, sitting in any place in the stadium, which team would it be and where would you sit?

“I would like to go to the NFL Pro Bowl game out in Hawaii. One of my friends who is stationed there has been to that game and it sounded like a great time.”

Who has had the greatest influence on your athletic career?

“My mom and friends from back home have been a great influence on me. I always feel so much support from them because they drive seven hours to come and watch me play. Even though they didn’t teach me the game, they are always so supportive and want me to do well. They’ve also taught me to focus and work hard at everything I do.”

If you were forced to give up all of your possessions but one, what would it be?

“The most contemporary video game out there, such as the Xbox or Playstation, is what I would have to keep.”

What is your best non-athletic talent?

“I’m pretty good at drawing. I’ve drawn my tattoos and I used to draw comic book characters, still life, or just anything that happened to be in front of me. I haven’t been able to do it as much since I started playing football since I don’t have as much free time.”

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned from being a college athlete?

“I would say that it’s the character-building situations that you deal with when you have to face adversity. Things won’t always go your way but having to fight for something and being able to achieve it feels better than having something handed to you.”

Do you have any pre-game rituals?

“I always make sure to talk to my family and friends from back home. I usually get a phone call or a text message from them.”

What is the best thing about being a college athlete at Tech?

“Working hard because it helps you develop as a man. Even though I don’t always enjoy having to do the work, I know it will pay dividends for me in the future.”

What has been the most memorable game that you have been a part of?

“This year’s Auburn game sticks out in my mind because we ended their 15-game winning streak on ESPN and I also felt like I played well.”

What won’t you miss about being a college athlete?

“I always hated early morning workouts and football camp.”

What is your all-time favorite meal?

“Roti. It’s a curried beef with potatoes and peas wrapped in a tortilla.”

What team would you add to the schedule?

“I would love to play the University of Florida because I’d like to get a chance to play in the Swamp.”

Besides Bobby Dodd Stadium, what is your favorite stadium to play in?

“I had a great time playing in the Citrus Bowl down in Orlando last year for our bowl game because that’s where I’m from and I had about 50 people come and watch me.”

Last CD that you’ve bought:

“Buju Banton. It’s a classic reggae artist who talks about real-live situations that are positive such as relationships with God.”

Favorite musical artist:

“I can’t just choose one because if I was stranded on an island, I would have to be able to listen to these four artists: Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Buju Banton, and Sizzla.”

Favorite TV show:

“The Family Guy.”

Besides playing in the NFL, what are your plans after college?

“I really want to go into sports broadcasting.”

Who is the athlete you most admire?

“John Randall. I admire how he got to the point where he’s at now by working so hard because he wasn’t even drafted and came from a small school.”

If you could play any other sport at Tech, what would it be?

“Baseball. I say this because those players are the most relaxed people on this campus. I know they work as hard as the other athletes, but they always seem so relaxed.”

Name a professor that has had an impact on you here at Tech:

“Douglas Flamming. I took his class on the history of Vietnam, and he’s a great guy who is funny, cool, and down to earth. He was always willing to work with us and I appreciated that.”
