Head Coach Paul Johnson
Opening Statement
“There’s not a whole lot to say about it. It’s pretty disappointing. I thought that it was kind of a tale of two halves. Our first half, defensively, we couldn’t get out of our own way. Offensively, we had a bunch of penalties, but we managed to move the ball a little bit. In the second half, we got squared away defensively, and we made some plays and got down the field, but we couldn’t finish a drive or do anything offensively. You know, special teams wasn’t much different either.”
“We’re disappointed, we’ll go back, try to get better. I can promise you, there ain’t no quit in me. I don’t think there’s any quit in those guys in the locker room. We’ll go back and work and see if we can get squared away.”
“We dug ourselves into such a hole and against a team that’s traditionally pretty good defensively. You know, you put yourself so far behind the eight ball.”
Sophomore QB Vad Lee
“We were killing ourselves. BYU has a good defense, and you can’t kill yourself against a good defense. They played the same as last year. Their defense doesn’t change; they just line up, they out man you, and that’s what they did to us.”
“We knew our defense would come back out in the second half, but I challenged our offense to come back out and score, and we just couldn’t do it”
Sophomore DL Adam Gotsis
“Once you’re behind in a football game, it’s hard to dig yourself out and getting down two scores or even a score and a field goal, and it’s tough to dig yourself out.”
Second-half adjustments on BYU’s QB
“Towards the second half once we knew what we were doing, then we could get lined up in time and make the right adjustments and were effective on the defensive side.”
Did you expect to see that kind of passing efficiency from them?
“It’s tough as a defense. We’ve got to get in his face and show color in the passing lanes, but I can’t put that on the coverage or anything. We have to get in his face on the defensive line and put pressure on him. We tried to keep him in the pocket, and it felt like we did most of the time, but the ball was coming out pretty quick as well, so it was tough to get a good feel on what they were doing.”
“I felt like everyone was confident, but it was the speed of their offense. It was tough to get the signals in and things like that because they were right up on the ball on every play, and I’ll give them credit for that. They’re a great offensive team,”
Junior OL Shaquille Mason
“We just didn’t execute. BYU went in, and they obviously made adjustments. We were put in the right position, but we had trouble executing.”
Junior WR DeAndre Smelter
“First we have to credit BYU’s defense. They came up, and they played hard. I think it’s mental, and we’re making mental mistakes”
