BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Georgia Tech softball team (0-3) fell to Penn State (3-0), 3-2, at the FAU Tournament at FAU Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Jackets are back in action tonight at approximately 8:15 p.m. against the FAU Owls.
Penn State pushed its first run across the plate on a sacrifice fly to deep center, which sophomore Colleen Darragh caught at the wall. The Nittany Lions tacked on an additional run after a leadoff double and a blooper to right field.
The Jackets retaliated with two runs in the top of the sixth stanza. Katie Johnsky smacked a one-out double and in the next at bat Courtney Ziese drilled a bomb over the leftfield wall, her first home run of the season, to knot the score 2-2.
Penn State regained the lead with a leadoff solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 3-2. The Jackets went to work in the top of the seventh as Chelsie Thomas reached on a PSU error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maddie Lionberger.
A one-out ground out by Karly Fullem put Thomas at third, poised to tie the game, but the Nittany Lions made the play on a grounder to the right side to end the game.
Freshman Emily Anderson (0-2) suffered the loss, and pitched six innings with three runs on six hits and four strikeouts. Penn State’s Macy Jones (1-0) earned her first win the season with 1.1 innings pitched.
