Georgia Tech improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2001 season.
Georgia Tech limited Connecticut to 38 yards and no first downs in the second half. Tech allowed a total of 196 yards and just six first downs for the game.
Tech allowed just 67 yards passing, the fewest since holding Maryland to 59 yards in 1998.
Tech held Connecticut to six first downs for the game, tying for the seventh fewest first downs allowed in a game in school history. It is the fewest first downs allowed since Oct. 15, 1966, a 17-3 Tech win over Auburn. Also of note, the two rushing first downs ties for the fewest allowed in school history.
Georgia Tech starting quarterback Reggie Ball took ill and was hospitalized Saturday morning. He is expected to remain hospitalized overnight.
Ball’s illness snapped a streak of 27 consecutive games started.
Tech also played without starting defensive end Eric Henderson.
Regular long-snapper Gavin Tarquinio has a hamstring injury. The errant punt snap that led to Uconn’s first touchdown was by backup Bret White. Tarquinio snapped on subsequent punts.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Bennett made his first start and first appearance in a college game. On his first snap, the lefthander hit Calvin Johnson for a 42-yard touchdown pass.
P.J. Daniels recorded the 13th 100-yard game of his career and his fourth straight, including last year’s bowl game.
On his second carry, P.J. Daniels moved past Joe Burns (2,634, 1998-01) and into fourth place on Tech’s career rushing list. He finished the game with 114 yards to give him 2744.
Kenny Scott returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown. He has two career interceptions and has returned both for touchdowns. The first was last season against NC State (49 yards).
Chris Reis’ second-quarter interception was the second of his career. Philip Wheeler’s third-quarter pick was his second of the season and also the second of his career.
The interceptions by Scott, Reis and Wheeler give Tech 10 on the season, by eight different players. The Jackets had 10 all of last year.
Travis Bell’s missed field goal was just the third miss of his career. He is now 20-for-23 in his career.
Tashard Choice, the transfer from Oklahoma, rushed for a career-high 89 yards and scored the first touchdowns of his career. He rushed 22 times for 100 yards last year for the Sooners but did not score. His top game at Oklahoma was 71 yards on 16 carries versus Texas Tech.
