Lauren Sauer recorded a career high 28 kills and all-America candidate Lynnette Moster tallied 24 kills as the No. 23 Georgia Tech volleyball team defeated Duke in four games, 23-30, 30-25, 30-25, 30-25. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 28-5, 13-3 Atlantic Coast Conference while the Blue Devils fall to 23-8, 11-5 ACC. The victory also earns the Jackets the second seed in the upcoming ACC tournament, which will be held in O’Keefe Gymnasium on the campus of Georgia Tech.
“What a phenomenal display by our outside hitting tandem of Lynnette and Lauren,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “Once again we got significant contribution from different players. Duke is a very frustrating team to play and has improve tremendously through the course of the regular season. The significance of tonight’s match was not just about being the number two seed, but rather continuing our momentum and staking a claim to our home court advantage as we prepare for the ACC Tournament.”
As a team, Tech outhit the Blue Devils, .316 to .262. Sauer led the way with a .351 percentage while Gergen was close behind hitting .333. The Jackets recorded 66 digs in the match to Duke’s 62 as Marisa Aston recorded a match-high 16 followed by Kele Eveland who notched 15. Eveland tallied 60 assists in the match.
The middle blockers led their team for Duke as Rachel Vander Griend recorded 14 kills and six block assists while Krista Dill tallied 14 kills and four block assists.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Friday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament facing seventh seeded Wake Forest.
