Stacey Gordon registered 33 kills and a .421 hitting percentage as the Ohio State Buckeyes upset the No. 21 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by posting a 3-0 (30-26, 30-28, 30-28) victory to win the Georgia Tech Invitational. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 6-0 on the season while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-5. That loss by the Yellow Jackets ends a 26-match winning streak at O’Keefe Gym and is the first defeat since the 2002 season.
“Stacey Gordon is enough on her own to frustrate a team and we just weren’t able to contain her today,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “We’re one cylinder away from being there as a team, but we can’t seem to get everyone together running at the same time. Lynnette Moster played really well and was solid for us and Jayme Gergen and Laura Kuhn provided the speed attack to our signature offense. We need to get back in the gym to find our team identity because there is a lot of the season left for us this year.”
Offensively, the Jackets posted a .309 team hitting percentage as Lindsey Laband recorded 44 assists in the match. Jayme Gergen, who was named to the all-Tournament team, notched 10 kills in the match while hitting .364 and posting six block assists. In addition, Laura Kuhn, who was also named to the all-tournament, had 11 kills and hit .400. Moster posted 18 kills and hit .341 and Sauer had 14 kills in the match.
Defensively, Tech posted 40 digs and six blocks assists as a team. Marisa Aston had a team-high 11 digs, while Jennifer Randall added seven.
Ohio State’s offense was the difference in the match as tournament MVP Stacey Gordon was virtually unstoppable on the afternoon. As a team, the Buckeyes hit .338. All-tournament selection Danielle Meyer added eight kills and hit .240 while Maya Mapp also chipped in eight kills and hit .375. Also earning all-tournament honors for the Buckeyes was Marisa Main, who had 54 assists in the three-game match.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Friday, Sept. 17 when they take Miami University in the Miami (OH) University Classic in Oxford, Ohio at 7 p.m.
