No. 21 Tech Sweeps Mississippi State

THE FLATS – No. 21 Georgia Tech volleyball (5-1) outmatched Mississippi State (5-2) on the way to a 3-0 sweep on Thursday in O’Keefe Gymnasium. The Jackets claimed their first home contest of the regular season as part of the Georgia Tech Classic in dominant fashion, holding an advantage across the board in kills (45-30), hitting percentage (.286-.161), assists (43-27), aces (7-3) and digs (39-31).

Orchestrating the potent Jacket attack was senior setter Matti McKissock, who tallied 40 assists and eight digs on her way to eclipsing 3,000 career assists. The former ACC Setter of the Year owns 3,031 career assists to date as she currently sits at eighth in program history.

Senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla and junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann formed a two-headed force through the night as both came away with 16 kills. Brambilla did so with a gaudy .483 hitting percentage clip along with seven digs and a block, while Bergmann picked up three aces and six digs.

Defensively, middle blocker Breland Morrissette anchored Tech with four total blocks (three assisted) along with pitching in four kills while senior libero Maddie Tippett led the squad in digs with 12.

How it Happened

The Jackets came out of the gates firing as they raced out to an early, 6-2 lead. As the Bulldogs inched back to a two-point deficit, Tech picked up six of seven points up to a 19-12 lead. The Yellow Jackets would take the final four points of the set for a strong, 25-16 first set win.

Mississippi State battled back in the second set, gaining ground on Georgia Tech with an 11-9 lead. The Jackets then went on a five-point run to take a 14-11 lead until the two sides found themselves in a 14 all deadlock. The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets continued to go back and forth until back-to-back points in three separate instances propelled Tech into a 25-22 second set win, capped by an ace courtesy of junior libero Paola Pimentel.

Similar to the first set, Georgia Tech burst into the fourth set taking an early, 6-1 lead. Mississippi State would draw within three, but a three-point run shortly after moved the Jackets ahead by six at 19-13. Tech would later take the final two points of the match for a 25-19 set win and 3-0 match sweep.
