THE FLATS – No. 21 Georgia Tech volleyball (6-1) took care of Indiana (5-4) with a 3-1 victory on Sunday in O’Keefe Gymnasium. After dropping the first set, the Jackets rattled off three straight set wins (25-19, 25-21, 25-17) to earn their 25th win of the last 27 matches at home on The Flats.

The “Killer B’s” swarmed the Hoosiers, leading the Jackets offensively with 45 of Tech’s 50 kills in the match. Senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla spearheaded the attack with team highs in kills (18) and digs (12) for her third double double of the year. The Brazilian also added four total blocks on the defensive end. Junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann came away with her fifth double double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs as well as three total blocks (two solo). The third layer to the attack in freshman outside hitter Bianca Bertolino finished with 14 kills, nine digs and a pair of solo blocks and aces.

Senior setter Matti McKissock had a solid day of her own, distributing the offense for 35 assists while adding 10 digs for her first double double of the year along with three total blocks on the defensive end.

Anchoring the Tech defense were senior middle blockers Breland Morrissette and Kayla Kaiser. Morrissette compiled a career-high six total blocks (2 solo, 4 assisted), and Kaiser was just behind with five total blocks (one solo, four assisted). Morrissette also picked up four kills and a pair of digs while Kaiser added an ace and a pair of assists.

How it Happened

The Hoosiers struck the first blow of the match, methodically inching ahead from a 12 all tally to create separation and maintain the gap up to a 25-20 first set win.

Georgia Tech responded early in the second set, using runs of three and four points to jump ahead, 10-4. Indiana crept back within two, but four straight Yellow Jacket points put the home squad ahead, 21-15. Tech had no trouble wrapping up the set as it later took a 25-19 set two win.

With the match knotted at one apiece, the two sides battled back and forth in a third set that saw 11 tie scores up to a 17 all deadlock. From there, Tech went on a four-point run and shortly after took four of the final five points for a 25-21 set three win and a 2-0 match lead.

The fourth set began in Indiana’s favor as the Hoosiers slipped in front, 7-1. A subsequent six-point run by the Jackets then evened the tally at 10 apiece, and a following seven-point run propelled Tech well in front of Indiana, 17-12. The runs proved to put the match out of reach for the Hoosiers as the Jackets went on to wrap up the match with a four-point run, concluded by an ace courtesy of McKissock, to secure Georgia Tech’s 25-17 third set win and 3-1 match win.
