No. 20 Georgia Tech Volleyball Wins 2002 ACC Title

Led by ACC Tournament MVP Lynnette Moster, who had 15 kills and nine digs, No. 20 Georgia Tech claimed the 2002 ACC Volleyball Championship title, defeating Florida State 3-1 (30-23, 30-23, 23-30, 30-19) Sunday afternoon.

Georgia Tech wins its second volleyball ACC championship in school history and is now a perfect 3-0 against Florida State in ACC Volleyball Championship play, having defeated the Seminoles in 1996 and 1997.

“It feels so great to win today and our entire team and staff is extremely proud and excited,” said head coach Bond Shymansky, who wins the ACC Championship in his first year as a head coach at Georgia Tech. “We are an extremely tight-knit group and we work hard everyday. FSU gave us all they had and did a great job of making adjustments in game three. It certainly wasn’t a pretty match in terms of offense, but we worked hard on the court and just gave it our all in today’s match.”

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets held Florida State to a .029 hitting percentage in game one of the Championship match, winning 30-23. With the game tied at 18-18, Georgia Tech went on a 12-5 run to finish the game. ACC all-tournament selection Kele Eveland paced the Yellow Jackets, posting 3 kills in 3 attempts, six assists and two digs.

In game two, Georgia Tech continued to keep Florida State out of its offensive rhythm, holding the Seminoles to only 12 kills and a .067 hitting percentage. ACC all-Tournament selection Alexandra Preiss hit .800 in the second game with four kills, two digs and two block assists.

After getting off to a slow start in the match, the Seminoles led by as many as ten points in the third game, winning game three, 30-23. Florida State hit .293 in the game, led by middle Dawn Hough, who collected six kills in nine attempts with no errors. Alex Sevillano added four kills, one ace and six digs in the win for the Seminoles.

Georgia Tech controlled game the deciding fourth game, winning 30-19. Georgia Tech was led by Moster, who recorded 15 kills, two service aces, nine digs, two block solos and two block assists. Preiss added 12 kills, four digs and three block assists while Lauren Sauer had 14 kills and four total blocks in the match.

Florida State was led by Kristin Frye, who had 13 kills and eight digs, while Alex Sevillano chipped in 12 kills and 15 digs.
