Ulrike Stegemann posted a team-best 10 kills and hit .250 as the No. 20 Georgia Tech volleyball team fell to No. 17 Arizona in three games (30-21, 30-24, 30-24) in its second match at the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Arizona. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-0 on the season while the Yellow Jackets drop to 0-2.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday when they take on Winthrop (2-2) in its final match of the tournament at 8 p.m. ET.
“This was a tough match for us tonight and Arizona played awfully well,” said head coach Bond Shymansky. “The outside hitting combination of seniors Kim Glass and Jennifer Abernathy was no comparison to our freshman outside hitting tandem of Talisa Kellogg and Laura DeMichelis, but we are learning. In game two, we did a much better job of running our offense and staying in system and I was pleased with the way that Jennifer Randall anchored our defense. We are playing well, but really need to cut down on our errors to become a good team. Our match tomorrow against Winthrop will be a very big match for our team as we continue to work at improving each time we step onto the court.”
Tech’s offense struggled, as the Jackets hit only .077 as a team, while Arizona posted a .330 hitting percentage. For the Jackets, Stegemann had a team-high 10 kills and hit .250, while Talisa Kellogg added nine, Callie Miller notched eight, and DeMichelis talled seven. Lindsey Laband, who led the nation in assists per game in 2004, recorded 34 assists in the match.
Defensively the Jackets were led by Abby Showers who had eight digs, followed by Kellogg who had six and Jennifer Randall and Laband who each had five.
The difference in the match were outside hitters Abernathy, who had 15 kills and hit .387 while recording four blocks and Glass, who recorded 13 kills and hit .550 with four block assists.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday when they take on Winthrop (2-2) in its final match of the tournament at 8 p.m. ET.
