No. 18 Jackets Baste Hokies

BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 18 Georgia Tech volleyball chalked up yet another match in the win column with a commanding sweep of Virginia Tech (25-17, 25-15, 25-13) on Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va., completing a flawless first ACC road trip of the season.

The Yellow Jackets (11-1, 2-0 ACC) thrashed the Hokies (9-5, 0-2 ACC) across the board, leading the match in points (59-31), kills (48-22), hitting percentage (.290-.043), assists (44-18), aces (6-3) and digs (47-30).

Coming off a season-high 23 kills at Wake Forest, senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla led the Jacket attack once again, this time over the Hokies with 16 kills at a .378 clip, including a pair of aces along with nine digs. Right behind Brambilla reinforcing the Tech offense were the remaining two “Killer B’s” as junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann posted 13 kills, including a pair of aces to go with six digs, while freshman outside hitter Bianca Bertolino picked up her fourth double double on the year by way of 11 kills (on a .320 clip) and 10 digs, also adding three total blocks (one solo, two assisted).

The Yellow Jackets are now a perfect 4-0 in true road matches following their fourth consecutive sweep and seventh straight win. Off to the program’s best start since 2003, Georgia Tech has now won 43 of its last 50 matches dating back to 2019.

How it Happened

Virginia Tech got off to a hot start early by jumping ahead 9-3, but Georgia Tech stormed back, coming out of a timeout outscoring the Hokies 22-8. The Jackets took their points throughout the span in bunches, using three separate three-point runs along with a stretch of four consecutive points on the way to the eventual 25-17 first set win.

Georgia Tech carried over its momentum from the first set into the second, stringing together four straight points to lead 4-1. The Jackets maintained the lead up to a tally of 12-8, but Virginia Tech answered Georgia Tech’s recent three-point run with four points of its own to knot things up. The Yellow Jackets took control from there with another four-point run and three subsequent spurts of three to outscore the Hokies 13-3 and claim the second set, 25-15.

The scoring runs continued for the White and Gold in the third set as Georgia Tech took five straight points early courtesy of the “Killer B’s,” followed shortly after by another four consecutive points to leap out to a dominant, 9-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets would maintain a distance of four points or more throughout the remainder of the set, taking seven of eight points up to a 21-11 lead before a Bergmann kill finished off the 25-13 third set win for the match sweep.
