No. 14 Jackets Decimate Tar Heels

THE FLATS – No. 14 Georgia Tech volleyball drubbed North Carolina (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) for yet another sweep on Friday night in O’Keefe Gymnasium. Thanks in large part to a season-high .490 hitting percentage, the Jackets earned their seventh straight ACC triumph and 11th sweep of the season, including seven over ACC foes.

Georgia Tech (18-3, 9-2 ACC) hammered North Carolina (17-5, 6-5 ACC) in the stat column, leading the Tar Heels in kills (54-32), hitting percentage (.490-.209), assists (50-32), digs (32-38) and blocks (6-4). Tech’s staggering .490 clip on the attack marks the highest hitting percentage for the Jackets since coming away with a .545 clip against Alabama A&M on Dec. 6, 2019.

The Brazilian bomb squad of junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann and senior right-side hitter Mariana Brambilla led the Jacket attack once again with a combined 31 kills. Bergmann was at the forefront of the offense with 17 kills at a striking .536 clip, a season high. The decorated attacker pitched in all around throughout the night, also adding 12 digs and a pair of blocks (one solo, one assisted) for her team-high ninth double double on the year. Brambilla reinforced Bergmann’s efforts with 14 kills of her own on a robust .480 hitting percentage while picking up four digs, a pair of assists and a block assist. Senior setter Matti McKissock orchestrated Tech’s offense with 42 assists along with six kills at a .667 clip, while senior middle blocker Erin Moss anchored the Jackets’ defense with three block assists.

The Yellow Jackets have now won 29 of their last 33 matches in O’Keefe Gymnasium. Georgia Tech has also won 50 of its last 59 matches dating back to 2019.

How it Happened

North Carolina caught fire early in the first set, using a seven-point run to jump ahead 10-5. Georgia Tech battled back though, incrementally drawing closer until four consecutive Jacket points drew the White and Gold within one, trailing 16-15. As the Tar Heels clung to the lead up to a 20-18 advantage, the Yellow Jackets took control, claiming seven of the last eight points in the set to stun North Carolina for a 25-21 first set win.

In the second set, Tech raced in front early by way of a four-point burst to lead 7-3. The Jackets climbed further ahead soon after with another four-point run, moving ahead 13-6. A final four consecutive points in favor of the White and Gold put the set out of reach for the Tar Heels as the Yellow Jackets moved up to a double-digit lead at 19-9, cruising on to an eventual 25-18 second set win.

The third set was back-and-forth early until Georgia Tech created separation using a stretch taking five of six points up to a 15-8 advantage. As the two teams traded blows, the Jackets once again went on a roll to claim five of six points out to a comfortable, 22-14 lead. With North Carolina out of striking distance, Bergmann fittingly sealed the third set with a kill to hand Georgia Tech the 25-16 third set win and match sweep.
