GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech seniors Bailey Hunter and Monique Mead were named to the preseason All-ACC volleyball team the ACC announced today.
In addition, the Yellow Jackets were picked sixth in the preseason poll as voted upon by the league’s 12 coaches. Tech finished tied for seventh in the ACC last year with an 8-12 record and was 15-16 overall.
Defending 2011 ACC regular season champ Florida State almost swept the number of first place votes, receiving 118 out of a possible 121 votes, including nine first-place votes. First-place votes were awarded 11 points, second place received 10 points, etc. Coaches were not allowed to include their own team in their predicted order of finish.
North Carolina picked up 111 points and the remaining three first-place votes. Clemson (97) and Duke (92) rounded out the top four teams. Miami’s 81 points put the Hurricanes in fifth, ahead of Georgia Tech (66), Virginia Tech (63) and NC State (56). Virginia (36), Maryland (34), Wake Forest (25), and Boston College (13) completed the predicted order.
A total of 10 teams are represented on the 2012 Preseason All-ACC Team. Clemson and Florida State led all conference schools with three selections, followed by Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Miami with two representatives.
Eleven of the 18 selections were voted to the 2011 All-ACC team, and seven were named Honorable Mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Mead and Hunter were selected to the 2011 All-ACC preseason team and Mead earned All-ACC honors last season. Mead also earned her third straight AVCA honorable mention All-American honors and was named to the COBRA Magazine All-National Team.
The Newnan, Ga. native, ranks second on the Georgia Tech single season all-time kills list, after tallying 588 in 2011 and sits in eighth place on the career kills list (1,459). Last season, she ranked second in the country and led the ACC with 5.03 kills per set and 5.70 points per set.
Hunter received a medical redshirt after starting the first seven matches of last season. She tallied 55 kills on 154 attempts, averaging 2.20 kills per set through the seven contests. In 2010, she was second on the team with 3.05 kills per set. She hit .259 and had 366 total kills, while finishing eighth in the league with 0.28 service aces a set.
Hunter, Mead and the Georgia Tech volleyball team open the 2012 season Aug. 24 against Cal State Fullerton at O’Keefe Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
