Mills Named ACC Rookie of the Week for Second Time

Oct. 3, 2016

THE FLATS – After rushing for 99 yards, amassing 108 all-purpose yards and scoring three touchdowns against No. 14 Miami (Fla.), Georgia Tech B-back Dedrick Mills has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Mills set new career highs with his 99 rushing yards and 108 all-purpose yards against Miami while his three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) matched a career high originally set versus Vanderbilt on Sept. 17.

His career-best 99 rushing yards came on just 19 carries, good for a 5.2-yard average. He scored all three of Georgia Tech’s touchdowns on a seven-yard run, nine-yard reception and one-yard run.

For the season, Mills ranks third among NCAA Division I FBS true freshmen with 75.0 rushing yards per game and leads the nation’s true freshmen with seven rushing touchdowns (two more than second-place Benny Snell of Kentucky) and 12.0 points per game. Among all FBS players, Mills is tied for fifth in scoring and seventh in rushing touchdowns.

The ACC Rookie of the Week award is Mills’ second in four career games. He also earned the recognition following his three-touchdown performance against Vandy on Sept. 17.

Mills and the Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-2 ACC) play their first true road game of the season this Saturday when they travel to Pitt (3-2, 0-1 ACC) for an ACC Coastal Division matchup. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. The game will be televised on the ACC Network (CW 69 in Atlanta).

Georgia Tech returns home on Oct. 15 for a non-conference contest versus Georgia Southern. Kickoff will once again be at 12:30 p.m. and the game will air on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network (Fox Sports South in Georgia). Tickets are available online at togetherweswarm.com.
