June 30, 2005

ATLANTA–Georgia Tech Senior Associate Director of Athletics Mary McElroy was introduced today as the new Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Georgia State University. She will assume her duties at Georgia State on July 18.

“Georgia State is pleased and excited to name Mary McElroy to lead the university’s athletics program as it officially joins the Colonial Athletic Association tomorrow (July 1),” Georgia State University President Carl Patton said. “Her significant management experience and knowledge of intercollegiate athletics will be a great asset to our coaches, student-athletes and staff.”

McElroy is currently a senior associate director of athletics and the senior woman administrator at Georgia Tech. She has been a part of the Tech staff. Prior to her current appointment, she also served as director of compliance, assistant director of athletics and associate director of athletics at Tech.

“I am very honored and humbled to be named the next athletic director here at Georgia State University,” McElroy stated. “In my development, I’ve been fortunate to have good people showing me the way all along, people who’ve encouraged me to excel and challenge me to develop my skills set so that I can be in a position to seize an opportunity such as this.”

Prior to arriving in Atlanta, McElroy spent four years at the United States Naval Academy, including three with the Naval Academy Athletic Association as senior woman administrator and assistant director of athletics for NCAA compliance.

A native of Great Mills, Md., McElroy earned a bachelor of science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1987 and then served as a supply officer in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years, attaining the rank of captain. She completed a master of science degree in management at Tech in 2000.

She is married to Terry McElroy and they have two sons, Darrin and Austin.
