March 16, 2002

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Georgia Tech All-ACC diver Paul McCarty wrapped up his sophomore season Saturday with a 29th-place finish in the men’s one-meter at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships at the University of Kentucky’s Lancaster Aquatic Center.

He posted a score of 240.10. Alabama freshman Stewart Smith outdistanced a trio of Miami divers to win the event. McCarty also finished 26th in Friday’s three-meter.

A total of 12 divers from Zone B advance to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which are scheduled for March 28-30 at the University of Georgia.

Tech swimmers Shilo Ayalon, James Salazar and Tomonori Tsuji have already qualified for the meet and hope to improve on last year’s 29th-place finish, which was the program’s best.

Freshman Cara DeVinny has qualified for the women’s championships, which are slated for March 21-23 at the University of Texas.
