Marshall, Mitchell Tabbed 2018 Captains

Jan. 24, 2018

THE FLATS – Senior quarterback TaQuon Marshall and linebacker Brant Mitchell have been named Georgia Tech football team captains for the 2018 season, head coach Paul Johnson announced on Wednesday. The captains were selected in a team vote.

“With 20 seniors on our roster, I felt that it was important to go ahead and select two team captains now to lead us through our offseason program. We’ll add a third captain in the fall,” Johnson said of his decision to vote on captains during the offseason, as opposed to early in the season as the Yellow Jackets have traditionally done under the 11th-year head coach.

Marshall was voted a team captain for the second-straight year. He started all 11 games at quarterback as a junior last season and accounted for 2,073 yards of offense (1,146 rushing, 927 passing) and 27 touchdowns (17 rushing, 10 passing). His 104.2 rushing yards per game ranked third overall in the Atlantic Coast Conference and fifth nationally among quarterbacks (25th overall). He also led the ACC in scoring (9.5 ppg) and his 17 rushing touchdowns were tied for 12th nationally (fourth among QBs).

He is only the eighth multi-year captain in the 126-year history of Georgia Tech football, joining H.C. Neblett (1931-32), Renso Perdoni (1969-70), Lucius Sanford (1976-77), David Lutz (1981-82), Steve Pharr (1991-92), Joshua Nesbitt (2009-10) and Justin Thomas (2014-16).

Mitchell was tabbed as a captain for the first time. He has appeared in 34 games as a Yellow Jacket and made 25 starts, including each of the last 23 contests that he has suited up for. He has tallied 158 tackles and four interceptions over the first three years of his collegiate career and finished fourth on the team with 51 tackles last season despite missing the better part of four games due to injury.

“There is no higher honor than being selected as a team captain by your teammates, so I’m happy for TaQuon and Brant,” Johnson said. “I think they’ll do a terrific job of leading our team.”
