Kellogg Powers Tech Volleyball Past Hokies, 3-1

ATLANTA – Talisa Kellogg recorded a match-high 18 kills and came one dig shy of a double-double to lead Georgia Tech past Virginia Tech, 3-1 (30-25, 19-30, 30-28, 31-29) Saturday night at O’Keefe Gym. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 9-5 on the season and 3-1 in the ACC while the Hokies dropped to 7-8, 1-4 ACC.

Tech’s active leader in kills with 1,096 in her career, Kellogg paced the Yellow Jackets with a .277 hitting percentage while also recording a pair of block assists on the night.

Joining Kellogg in double figures was right side hitter Ulrike Stegemann, who notched 11 kills in addition to two digs and a block assist.

Junior libero Michelle Kandell provided the spark on defense with 14 digs while senior outside hitter Lindsey Gray recorded 10 digs, nine kills, three total blocks and three assists against the Hokies. Middle hitter Callie Miller led Tech with four block assists.

Kellogg and Gray combined for 10 kills, and the Yellow Jackets hit .333 as a team, as Georgia Tech won game one, 30-25. Kellogg hit .625 while posting three digs and a block assist while Gray hit .400 and added a solo block in the frame.

The Hokies responded by hitting .414 in game two while the Yellow Jackets managed just 11 kills while committing eight attacking errors to fall 30-19. Through two games, Kellogg led all players with seven kills while the Hokies were paced by Kristen Cunningham and Taylor Parrish, who had notched six apiece.

Parrish led the Hokies with 12 kills on the night, while Sarah Munoz and Jen Albrecht added 11 and 10, respectively.

With the score tied at 28-28 in the third game, Tech setter Allie Niekamp had her serve roll over the net tape for an ace before Kellogg went angle for a kill to give Tech a 30-28 game win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Niekamp had 28 assists in the contest while Tech freshman Mary Ashley Tippins added 20 assists and eight digs vs. Virginia Tech.

There were a total of eight tie scores and two lead changes in the fourth game before Tech finished off the match with back-to-back kills by Gray and Kellogg for the 31-29 game victory.

The Yellow Jackets hit the road again next weekend for a pair of matches at Florida State and Miami. Tech faces the Seminoles Friday at 7 p.m., with the game scheduled to be aired on Sun Sports, while the Jackets’ Sunday match at Miami can be found on ACC Select (gatech.playonsports.tv).
