Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson and linebacker Philip Wheeler were to tabbed to SI.com’s (Sports Illustrated) Mid-Season All-America first team.
Thirteenth-ranked Georgia Tech (5-1, 3-0 ACC) and No. 1 Ohio State are the only two schools with two individuals on the first team.
Johnson is also the No. 1 player on ESPN.com columnist Bruce Feldman’s “Midseason Hot 100,” while Wheeler is No. 18 on the list.
Johnson, the junior all-America from Tyrone, Ga., leads the ACC with 35 catches for leads the ACC in receptions (35, 5.8 pg) and receiving yards (559, 93.2 pg), while his eight touchdown catches are second nationally.
In the last three games, all-America wide receiver Calvin Johnson has 22 catches for 413 yards and five touchdowns. He was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week three of the first five weeks of the season.
Wheeler, a junior from Columbus, Ga., leads Tech with 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He was named Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week after helping Tech to a 38-27 win at 10th-ranked Virginia Tech.
Winners of five straight games, Tech is off this week before playing at No. 12 Clemson next Saturday.
