Jackets Open Play in ITA South Regional Saturday

Oct. 19, 2007

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s women’s tennis team, the reigning national champions, will continue their fall schedule this weekend at the ITA South Region Championships, which is being played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.

The tournament begins Saturday morning and concludes Tuesday.

Tech will be returning to Athens for the first time since capturing the NCAA title in late May.

“I’m certainly looking forward to going over to Athens to compete this weekend,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We have some great feelings remaining from being over there in May, and I’m looking forward to seeing what improvements we’ve made since our tournament in California two weeks ago.”

The tournament will showcase players from 22 different schools around the South including some of the nation’s top singles players and doubles tandems. There will be two flights, an “A” and a “B,” which will have a 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles bracket. There will consolation for singles only. Admission is free.

A total of 16 players in the ITA Top 125 singles rankings are scheduled to play in the event along with six doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60. All eight Yellow Jackets will compete this weekend.

The “A” flight singles and doubles winners along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month on the campus of Ohio State in Columbus. The elite event, slated for Nov. 1-4, is the second collegiate grand slam event of the season. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country plus at-large selections will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.

The draw for the ITA Southern Regionals will be available Friday evening and be posted on the Bulldog website at georgiadogs.com. Results from all Georgia Tech matches will be updated on RamblinWreck.com.
