ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team opened the Bulldog Classic on Friday posting an overall record of 7-3 in singles and doubles action combined. The three-day round-robin tournament is being played at the Athens Country Club.
Tech opened the tournament facing Texas Tech in singles play and Georgia State in doubles play. The morning got started with the Yellow Jackets going 4-3 in singles as Johnnise Renaud, Rasheeda McAdoo, Kenya Jones and Nami Otsuka each picked up singles victories. No. 20 Renaud kicked things off with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over No. 102 Alex Valenstein, while teammate McAdoo, ranked No. 77 in the preseason, also grabbed a straight set, 6-3, 6-0, victory over No. 106 Felicity Maltby.
Jones battled back after dropping the first set 6-3, to claim a three-set decision over No. 65 Sarah Dvorak, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Classmate Otsuka also overcame a first set loss, taking a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Alba Cortina-Pou.
In doubles action, the Yellow Jackets dropped a combined six games between three matches. Tech paired Renaud and McAdoo to cruise past Georgia State’s Anastasia Grosheva and Tarani Kamoe 6-2, while Jones and Anton-Ohlmeyer defeated Damira Muminovic and Daniela Ramirez, 6-3. Tech’s final doubles tandem of Otsuka/Gizdova completed the doubles sweep with a 6-1 triumph over Lara Vovk/Kristin Rehse.
Play resumes on Saturday at 8 a.m. with Tech taking on Georgia in doubles play. The Yellow Jackets will face Georgia State in singles later in the day.
