ATLANTA – Talisa Kellogg posted a match-high 14 kills and the Yellow Jackets hit a season-high .431 as Georgia Tech (3-1) stopped Western Carolina (3-4), 3-0 (30-18, 30-17, 30-16) in the opening match of the 2007 Regency Suites/Georgia Tech Classic Friday morning at O’Keefe Gym.
Kellogg hit a season-high .500 in the match, recording 14 kills with no errors on 28 attack attempts. The Jackets had six players hit over .400, including Callie Miller (.625, 10-0-16), Nikki Kaminskas (.750, 3-0-4) and Ulrike Stegemann (.636, 8-1-11). As a team, the Jackets committed just nine attacking errors on 102 attempts.
Freshman setter Mary Ashley Tippins directed the Yellow Jacket offense with 42 assists in her first career start. She also recorded seven digs, four kills and a service ace in the morning match.
Junior libero Michelle Kandell led Tech in digs for the fourth-straight match, posting nine digs on a day when eight different Yellow Jackets had at least three digs in the match.
Miller was the only other Yellow Jacket in double figures, as the junior middle hitter had 10 kills on 16 attempts against the Catamounts. Kellogg had five digs, a solo block and block assists and a pair of service aces in addition to her 14 kills.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Friday night when they host their instate rival, the Georgia Bulldogs at 8 p.m. at O’Keefe Gym.
