ATLANTA – The Yellow Jacket women’s tennis team concluded play at the Georgia Tech Invitational Sunday, which the Jackets were hosting at the Bill Moore Tennis Center, and finished with a total of 18 singles wins and nine doubles victories in matches against players from Florida State, Maryland and Marshall in the three-day tournament.
The Jackets were led on the courts by Kelly Anderson and Kacie Anson both of which went undefeated in both singles and doubles action in the tournament.
“I thought that it was great to have some good competition from other ACC schools and a school that we had never seen before,” said Anderson. “There were some great players in this tournament and I felt like the format really prepared us for the spring competition. “It was really fun to be able to play in front of so many fans on our home court, and the weather turned out nice for the entire weekend.”
Georgia Tech won nine of 12 doubles matches in the tournament, including three on Sunday against members of the Maryland women’s tennis team. Lindsey Stauss and Esther van Londen got the day started with an 8-4 win over Brooke Rogers and Julia Graca, and Anderson and Lyndsay Shosho followed that up with an 8-3 victory over Marianne Baker and Jennifer Dent. The other two doubles matches went to tiebreakers, with Georgia Tech winning one of the two. The Jackets’ duo of Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio dropped a 9-8 (4) decision to the Terrapins’ Ramona But and Tamar Huppes, but Dasha Potapova and Anson won their tiebreaker 13-11 against Neda Mihneva and Veronika Subertova to round out doubles action.
The Jackets took 18 of 24 singles matches, with four of them coming Sunday afternoon against Florida State opponents. Anderson led things off for the Tech team by recording a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Roxanne Clark, and Silverio followed her with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Miranda Foley. Also recording straight-set singles victories on the day were Potapova and Anson, as Potapova dropped Lindsay Deason, 6-3, 6-2, and Anson downed Amberly Tantee, 7-5, 6-4.
“I thought it was a really good weekend, and I think that it gave us a good feel for what the dual-matches will be like in the spring, especially for our younger players” said Georgia Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “I think that we really improved in our doubles play, as we got better each day of the tournament. We have a group of competitors that didn’t give in and I loved the way that we competed this weekend. We are going to work hard in the next couple of months, but I’m excited about the spring.”
Anderson echoed Shelton’s thoughts on the tournament, saying that “overall I think that the team played really well. We pulled our singles matches yesterday against Maryland, and I think that the entire tournament really builds our confidence for the upcoming spring.”
The Georgia Tech Invitational concluded the Yellow Jackets’ fall tournament play, and the team will be off until they travel to Ann Arbor for the Michigan Invitational at the beginning of January.
