Nov. 13, 2003

Georgia Tech punter Hal Higgins has been named to the Academic All-District III football team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Higgins is a sixth-year senior on the football field but a graduate student in the classroom, pursuing a master’s in business administration. He earned his bachelor’s degree in management in 2002, graduating with highest honor.

He is now eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America team.

Higgins started eight of Tech’s first nine games at punter, averaging 37.5 yards per kick. He is also in his third season as Tech’s holder on field goals and extra points.

A native of Cornelia, Ga., Higgins was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA after battling Hodgkin’s disease in 1999-2000. He was recently named a finalist for the 2003 Football Writers Association of America/ESPN The Magazine Courage Award.
