THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team downed the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 28-26), Friday night in the Yellow Jackets’ last home match of the season. Tech improves to 19-11 overall and 10-9 in ACC action, while Wake Forest falls to 10-21 on the season and 4-15 in league play.
“I felt like tonight we went out and played, and had fun,” head coach Tonya Johnson said. “I thought we bounced back and responded well because last night was a tough loss. I thought we battled last night, but we didn’t make big plays in the end and Duke did. I thought we bounced back and I thought we played pretty good volleyball tonight.
“It was a special night for our seniors. What a way to go out with a victory on our home court in their last match at home. I just want to thank the fans for all of their support and for being here tonight for our seniors and cheering them on to victory.”
Speaking of seniors, Monique Mead had a team-high 14 kills on 23 swings with just two errors for an impressive .522 hitting percentage. She added 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Bailey Hunter contributed 10 kills and Annie Czarnecki had nine.
The Yellow Jackets set up a 19-12 lead in game one courtesy of a 7-1 run. Hunter gave Tech set-point, 24-16, with a kill, but only after Susan Carlson and Nicki Meyer chased down a shanked dig. Wake Forest delayed the inevitable by scoring two more points, but the Yellow Jackets closed it out, 25-18.
Tech held a two-point advantage, 9-7, in game two until the Yellow Jackets scored four-straight behind the serving of Zoey Morton. Tech followed that up with another 4-0 rally and ran away with the game, 25-16, to go up 2-0 in the match.
Wake Forest took its second lead of the entire match in the third game, 7-6. Georgia Tech was unable to regain control of the game as Wake Forest worked its way to a 23-20 lead. The Jackets scored the next two to close the gap, 23-22, and tied it up on a huge block by Mead and Czarnecki. Four match-points later and Tech was able to win the final frame, 28-26, and the match, 3-0, thanks to a kill by Hunter.
Georgia Tech’s final game of the 2012 regular season is Tuesday at Clemson. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
