GEORGIA TECH FOOTBALL
Post-Practice Report – August 13, 2007
Practice #12
Rose Bowl Field
4:30-6:20 p.m.
Format: Shells (helmet, shoulder pads, shorts)
Weather: Hot, sunny, around 94 degrees
Georgia Tech held the second of two practices Monday afternoon at Rose Bowl Field. The Yellow Jackets, who donned full pads for a two-hour workout in the morning, went lighter and for just under two hours this afternoon. The season opener Sept. 1 at Notre Dame is less than three weeks away.
Notebook:
— The Yellow Jackets will practice just once on Tuesday (10:15 a.m.) and will take their team photo in the afternoon.
— Two Georgia Tech events are coming up later this week. GT Day at Turner Field is Friday when the Atlanta Braves host the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Great Jacket Encounter I – previously known as fan/photo day – is Saturday (3 p.m.) inside Bobby Dodd Stadium. That event is free to the public.
Fact of the Day:
Since Chan Gailey arrived in Atlanta prior to the 2002 season, his Yellow Jackets have won 24 ACC games in five seasons. Only FloridaState, with 28 ACC wins, has won more. It should be noted that three schools — BostonCollege, Miami and Virginia Tech — have been in the ACC for three years or less. Over the last two seasons combined, Virginia Tech has the most league wins (13) with Georgia Tech second (12).
By The Numbers:
12 — The Yellow Jackets have finished with a winning percentage of .500 or better in ACC play for 12 consecutive years, the longest current streak in the league by four years.
14 – Where Georgia Tech ranks nationally in Athlon’s preseason poll.
23 – Where Georgia Tech ranks nationally in Playboy’s preseason poll. Umm, errrr, well, that’s what we heard.
24 – ACC victories over the last five years; more than any other school with the exception of FloridaState.
QUOTING Djay Jones, SENIOR, SAFETY
On how the secondary is meshing together:
“We’re coming together pretty well. We’re meshing together out there just trying to make plays every time.”
On bringing all the starters back in secondary from Gator Bowl:
“Well, we have a lot of guys back and we have to get everyone in position to make plays, and when we do, we have to make them.”
QUOTING Jamal Lewis, SENIOR, SAFETY
On the secondary being stronger this year
“We’re more experienced, watching more film, and reading more into the formations, and stuff like that, to be able to understand exactly what we have to do.”
QUOTING HEAD COACH Chan Gailey
On senior safeties Jamal Lewis and D.J. Donley being good friends off the field:
“I think the best thing about it is that they communicate a lot. They have to be on the same page and I think they are on the same page.”
