THE FLATS – Georgia Tech football was picked to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division in 2017, according to a poll of 167 media members in attendance at last week’s ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte.
Riding a four-game winning streak into the 2017 campaign, Georgia Tech received nine first-place votes and 708 total points in the ACC preseason poll, behind only favorite Miami and defending champion Virginia Tech in the Coastal Division. The Yellow Jackets, which have finished first or second in the Coastal Division six times in head coach Paul Johnson’s nine seasons on The Flats, were picked to finish ahead of Pitt, North Carolina, Duke and Virginia in the 2017 Coastal Division race.
This season’s third-place prognostication comes on the heels of being picked to finish sixth in the Coastal Division in 2016. Georgia Tech answered the sixth-place prediction by going 9-4 overall a season ago with wins in six of its final seven games. The Jackets’ season-ending four-game winning streak included victories at Virginia Tech, at Georgia and over Kentucky in the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl.
The Yellow Jackets are one of only eight Power Five conference programs that carries a winning streak of four games or better into the 2017 season.
Georgia Tech opens the 2017 campaign on Monday, Sept. 4 versus Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta. Season tickets, which include a seat for the highly anticipated opener against Tennessee at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Flex Packs, which allow fans to purchase tickets for any three, four, five or six games at Bobby Dodd Stadium – including the Nov. 25 showdown versus archrival Georgia – are on sale now.
